The Karhuemo pattern, Finnish for "mother bear", was conceived when Aino-Maija Metsola was designing her own contribution to the Ruudut pattern, created in the spring of 2021 as a collaboration between four Finnish designers. The Ruudut pattern consisted of plant-themed squares made using the paper-cutting technique – during the sketching process, Metsola came up with the idea of adding a bear with its cub to one of the squares.
